US Department of Energy invests $6.2m to advance hydrogen in turbine electricity generation

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded $6.2m to university-led projects aimed at advancing hydrogen as an efficient gas in turbine-based electricity generation.

With the funding, revealed on Wednesday (May 12), the projects will increase the reliability, efficiency and performance of hydrogen power, will reduce carbon emissions and advance the Biden-Harris administrations goal of a 100% clean electricity by 2035.

The eight projects supported by the DOE Office of Fossil Energy’s ‘University Turbines Systems Research (USTR)’ program will study fundamental scientific challenges and applied engineering issues associated with advancing the performance and efficiency of combustion turbines fuelled with pure hydrogen.

Each project will be led by a faculty member or principal investigator and will include robust engagement from graduate students.

The universities include the following: Georgia Tech, the University of Central Florida, San Diego State University, Purdue University received two instalments, Ohio State University, the University of California, Irvine and the University of Alabama.

Jennifer Granholm, the Secretary of Energy, said, “Our economic competitors are getting serious about harnessing carbon emissions free power from hydrogen, and so the US must as well.
