The ‘Hydrogen Hype’ Is Justified – Here’s Why

November 23, 2021

Hydrogen is no stranger. For more than 100 years, humans have worked with this ubiquitious element in various capacities, and we’ve long known its potential as a clean energy source. But again and again, hydrogen has fallen short of expectations, most recently in the early 2000s.

Over the last several years, however, something changed: Technology advanced, enabling hydrogen to be developed at scale, not only as a carbon-free energy carrier but also as a storage resource.

This was the missing factor. As hydrogen proponents explained recently at the COP26 summit, storage allows us to unleash the full potential of this versatile gas to achieve – over time – a complete decarbonization of the energy system and hard-to-abate industrial and transport sectors. That is why the current ‘hydrogen hype’ is justified, and why I truly believe it will be possible for the world to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
