Anglo American, Salzgitter partner to deepen hydrogen knowledge in steelmaking

Anglo American has partnered with Salzgitter Flachstahl to research the implementation of hydrogen into the green steelmaking process with the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) today (August 4).

With a deeper knowledge of hydrogen in the steelmaking process, it is expected that this could develop broader hydrogen technologies.

The two companies will conduct research into feed materials, including iron ore pellets and lump iron ores, suitable for use in direct reduction (DR) steelmaking based on natural gas and hydrogen.

By researching deeper understandings of hydrogen in the steelmaking processes, vast parts of this hard-to-abate industry could become green.

This collaboration partners two large-scale global companies to join the collective knowledge of hydrogen within this process to help support new innovative technologies and boost decarbonisation of the sector.

The MoU reinforces Anglo American’s existing commitments to the steelmaking industry, ensuring that the group continues to provide high quality iron ore products that are additionally green and eco-friendly.
